Terms and policy acknowledgement

I Agree quick-start guide

Configure the agreement, activate the theme embed, and verify that customers must acknowledge your policies before continuing to checkout.

Preparation

Before you start

  • Publish the terms, refund, privacy, age, shipping, or other policies customers must acknowledge.

  • Decide whether shoppers should read the policy in an on-page popup or on an existing policy page.

  • List every cart path your theme uses: full cart, cart drawer, Buy It Now, and accelerated payment buttons.

End-to-end setup

Quick setup

  1. 01

    Configure the agreement

Set the checkbox label, then choose Popup or New tab. Add the popup content or the full URL of your policy page.

  2. 02

    Set the blocked-checkout response

Choose whether an unaccepted checkout attempt opens the terms popup or displays your custom error message.

  3. 03

    Match the storefront

Adjust the agreement color and spacing. Use custom CSS only when your theme needs an additional visual adjustment.

  4. 04

    Protect product-page checkout buttons

Keep Dynamic Checkout protection enabled when customers use Buy It Now, Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, or other accelerated buttons.

  5. 05

    Activate the app

Open the theme editor, enable the I Agree app embed in the published theme, and save.

  6. 06

    Test every purchase path

Verify the full cart, cart drawer, product-page checkout buttons, and mobile storefront. Confirm checkout is blocked until the agreement is accepted.

After launch

Daily use

Review consent

The agreement timestamp is carried into the Shopify order details so staff can review the acknowledgement later.

Update policy wording

Change the checkbox text, linked page, or popup content in the app and save. Test again after any theme change.

Monitor storefront protection

Use the app dashboard to review agreement events, protected checkout attempts, and terms-content views.

Before you launch

Important notes

  • The storefront checkbox is added before checkout. Workflows that skip the cart, including some invoice or custom checkout links, should be tested separately.
  • Custom cart drawers and apps that redraw the cart can require a theme-specific adjustment.
  • A single agreement can reference multiple policies. Separate product-specific checkboxes are not part of the standard setup.

Common fixes

Troubleshooting

The checkbox is not visible.

Confirm the I Agree app embed is enabled in the published theme, save the theme, and test both the full cart and cart drawer.

Customers can bypass the checkbox.

Enable Dynamic Checkout protection and test every Buy It Now or accelerated button. If a custom cart still bypasses the check, send support the storefront URL and theme name.

The checkbox does not work in a cart drawer.

Cart drawers are theme-specific. Confirm it works on the full cart, then contact support so the drawer’s checkout control can be inspected.

Where is the consent record?

Open the Shopify order and review its additional details or custom attributes for the I Agree acknowledgement and timestamp.
